In just over a month’s time, I’ll be a qualified teacher.
For the past few months, reminding myself of this fact has been scary and at times over-whelming. I’ve been studying and teaching for my part-time CELTA qualification since February 2018, but the journey started in March 2017 at a yoga retreat when I decided that this was what I wanted to do.
With two assignments passed and several classes completed, I’ve now reached a point where thinking of myself as a teacher isn’t a cause for anxiety – it’s something to celebrate. I feel comfortable with my new title, motivated by the responsibilty it brings and excited by the opportunities it will provide.
I’ve been researching schools across the world, speaking to existing teachers, meeting fellow trainees, and joining online groups. It is a welcoming family and, while I know I still have a long way to go, I feel like I might have found something I can really dedicate myself to – and maybe even enjoy!
So if you’re thinking of doing the CELTA – or indeed taking any step towards a new career or life – then don’t let fear stand in your way. At worst, you’ll fail and learn a few lessons. But at best, you’ll allow yourself to grow and learn in countless ways.
Be bold. Be brave. Be the best you can be.
